Emmons County 4-H Scholarship Winner

Wednesday, May 26th, 2010

Jennifer Naaden received the 2010 Emmons County 4-H Scholarship in the amount of $200. This scholarship is given annually to past 4-H members who are presently enrolled in college.

“What 4-H Has Done to Influence My Plans for My Future”……

Throughout my many years in 4-H, I developed a wide variety of skills to help me succeed in life. From responsibility, to critical thinking, each skill has important value. But, the one skill from   4-H that has impacted my life the most is the love for service. 4-H is centered around service; from doing projects, to leading meetings, to service projects within a local club. Through the love of service engrained in me from 4-H, my career goals are centered on helping the poor and unfortunate.

My career aspirations are helping those in need through my education, degrees, and experience. Once I graduate from North Dakota State University with a Bachelors of Science in Political Science and graduating with a law degree, I intend on working first-hand with abused women and their abusers with an emphasis on sexual assault and rape. The skills of critical thinking and being able to put in action an idea that I gained from my years in 4-H will be essential for me in this career.

Through this work and personal experience, I aim to create an advertising campaign and travel the state of North Dakota and even across the nation speaking about the effects of these types of abuse and what can be done to prevent it. I want to share with people the pain and affliction that so many people are silently suffering from because they do not know how to get help.

After gaining five years experience in this career, I plan to pursue my next goal of being a lawyer who defends the poor and needy. I aspire to create a law firm that only takes money from a client if the case is won so that the client is not worse off financially in the end. My public speaking skills gained through the judging of static projects and project expo will be key in speaking about the injustices in the judicial system and working on changing the broken system.

Finally, I hope to achieve my final goal of being elected to public office. I desire this position because leadership is purely about serving the needs of others. Therefore in this role of society, I can serve others and help advocate for legislation that will truly help people. Through my firsthand experiences and career knowledge, I will understand what is needed for people to have a vibrant society with each person having a viable chance to succeed in life.

In these careers in my life, the impact I hope to leave on the community is not my face or name but simply my love for serving others. I hope to spark other people’s untapped love for service that I gained from 4-H so they may continue on my passion-filled dream.
